Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics

The Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics was founded in 1994. Dr. Tripti Sengupta was the first co-ordinator of this major course. Presently the department has one full time (contractual) and four guest lecturers. The department has its own lecture room and a well-equipped nutritional laboratory.

Student Profile

At entry point, students are required to get at least 55% in aggregate and 50% in each of the subjects Chemistry, Biology and Physics/Nutrition at H.S. or equivalent level. Students spontaneously participate in subject related debates, seminars, poster presentation, quiz and lecture competitions at different levels. Students prepare wall magazines & write articles for the college magazine. For the last five years departmental success rate is very high and some students scored brilliant results in the University Examinations

Learning Resources

  1. The main teaching methods are lectures, class discussion, field visits and case studies.
  2. Tutorials, mock-tests and surprise tests are held periodically.
  3. Students are sent to on job training in hospitals and nursing homes and CINI for practical experience.
  4. Learning resources include good collection of books in the college central Library, internet facility and power point presentation.
  5. Remedial classes are arranged for academically weak students.
  6. Field projects are arranged.
  7. Students are given assignments and reference materials

Students can opt for MSc courses in Home Science, Applied Nutrition, Food Science and Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics, Food & Nutrition, Food Service Management, Food Processing and NutritionScience, Sports Nutrition, etc.

Career Prospects

Students can work as nutritionists & dietitians in different health organizations, NGOs, corporate sectors; teachers in schools; professors in colleges/ universities. research analyst/ Marketing personnel in food industries. they can also become an entrepreneur.

07.09.2015 - Participation in the National Nutrition Week Programme oraganised by Nutrition Society of India (NSI), Calcutta Chapter in collaboration with Bengal Infertility & Reproductive Therapy Hospital (BIRTH) & Dr. Subhas Mukherjee Reproductive Health Care Centre at Rotary Sadan, Kolkata. Dr. Gautam Khastgir delivered an important lecture on "Role of Nutrition in Infertility." His speech was followed by an enlightening question & answer session.

05.09.2015 - National Nutrition Week Programme of the Bagbazar ICDS Project at Sovabazar Rajbari Natmondir Seminar Hall. Faculty, Ms. Pratyasha Agrawal, delivered a lecture on the "Importance of Nutrition through Different Stages of Life" & judged recipe contest. Awards were given away to best low-cost nutritious recipes prepared by the mothers of ICDS beneficiaries.

04.09.2015 - Symposium on 'Continuing Nutrition Education' organized by IDA Bengal Chapter in collaboration with Saffola for celebrating National Nutrition Week at Rotary Sadan, Kolkata. Students actively participated in the walk organized to spread nutrition awareness. This was followed by various lectures by experts on the theme of Nutrition Week. Ms. Pratyasha Agrawal, Contract Faculty of the Department spoke about "Lifestyle Diseases."

03.09.2015 - Celebration of National Nutrition Week by the Department through a Special Lecture on the importance of nutrition in our daily life by Mr. Bimalendu Basak, President, Nutrition Society of India, Calcutta Chapter. The theme was "Poshak Aahar, Desh Ka Adhar". The lecture ended with a question & answer session.

12.05.2015 - Paper presentation by the 1st year Students of CND Department on on topics related to clinical nutrition and dietetics. Each presentation was followed by a question & answer session.

International Women's Day Celebration by IDA -Bengal Chapter in collaboration with Kolkata Nagarik Sammyelan, ward no-49 on 5th April, 2015 at Sealdah. The event included sharing of knowledge by experts on women's health along with health check-up & diet counseling. Students helped in BMI calculation of participants along with other nutrition experts.

21-22 February, 2015 - A two- day 'Dignity Foundation Seminar' entitled "Frontiers in Medicine 2015", a conference designed exclusively for senior citizens was organised at Rotary Sadan, Kolkata, to understand the 'Latest Developments in Prevention & Management of Diseases' the conference was attended by the students of the Department and the Faculty. Both were enlightened by the specialist doctors from various fields about the latest information on various health problems in elderly and their prevention & management. Role of diet in overall geriatric health was discussed by nutrition experts, Ms. Kakoli Mitra, Ex Reader in Home Science, CU & Dt. Aparajita Saha, Co-founder of Nutridiet. Lifestyle and ageing and the role of yoga in ageing were also discussed. Students of CND department participated in diet counselling of old people which included anthropometric assessment, health tips, demonstration of food guide pyramid & explanation of balanced diet. Overall the seminar was quite informative and gave the students a practical insight into the subject 'Dietetics.'

28.01.2015 - A "Mass Awareness Camp for Kidney Disease" organized by The Kidney Care Society undertook a discussion & demonstration session for adolescent girls at Sir Nipendranath Girls' High School, Kolkata. The programme was organised by IDA, Bengal Chapter for celebrating 'Dietetics Day.' The theme of the programme was "Nurture the Girl Child" & the Slogan was "A Healthy Girl Becomes a Healthy Mother. Good Nutrition is an Investment like No Other." Ms. Pratyasha Agrawal, Faculty, CND Department, discussed about the importance of balanced diet with the help of a 3D model of Food Guide Pyramid prepared by the First Year students of the Department. The importance of inclusion of all food groups in daily diet with special emphasis on nutrients like protein, iron, calcium & vitamin C were discussed with the help of labeled food samples. The students were also shown the harmful food items that should be consumed in moderation. The importance of daily consumption of green which is full of anti-oxidants was also emphasized.

15th January, 2015 - A survey was conducted by the CND Department along with the Education Department among pre-school children, who have been ICDS beneficiaries at the ICDS centres near Gopalpur to find out the nutritional status of these children and relationship if any with their education status. The survey was followed by a short lecture-cum-demonstration on balanced diet for mothers, AWW & AWH. Later the children were given biscuits, oranges, sweets and stationary.
