Department of Economics of Gokhale Memorial Girls' College has been admitting students for Economics under 3-year B.Sc. Degree Courses offered by the University of Calcutta since the academic year 1984-85. It was as early as in 1957 that the University had extended its affiliation to the College to teach economics and the subject was taught only as a General Course from 1957 to 1983 with only two full-time faculty members, Mrs. Chitra Ghosh and Dr. Lapita Sarkar. Mrs. Ghosh joined the college in 1959 and retired in 1994. Dr. Sarkar joined Asutosh College, Kolkata vide recommendation of the West Bengal College Service Commission as full-time faculty, temporarily replacing another permanent faculty who had availed of leave under F.I.P. In 1984 she was appointed as lecturer in a substantive post in Gokhale Memorial Girls' College and the journey of this Department commenced taking it from one significant milestone to another. What began with three students in 1984-85, Economics Honours went on to become one of the most sought-after course in the College with increasing number of students admitted with each passing year.
