The department of Geography was established in the year 1938 (the subject was taught in the intermediate (Arts) level) to provide the opportunities for geographical studies, research-oriented activities and career-oriented discussion among the students. Later in 1948 I. Sc. was introduced. Teaching at graduation level started in the year of 1957. In 1965 Geography Honours level was introduced.
Geography is an interdisciplinary subject which entails the study of natural sciences, social sciences, and cartography. In other words, Geography includes learning about the physical and cultural features of Earth and their relationship. However, it is important for career path depending on whether a student takes up Physical Geography or Human Geography. Physical Geography is a natural science that focuses on the different elements of Earth. On the other hand, Human Geography refers to a social science dealing with problems within communities and cultures. Popular careers in Geography includes academics (teacher/professor), Researcher in organisations, Cartographers, Environmental Consultant, Urban Planner, Tourism Officer, GIS Specialist, Demographer, Hydrologist etc.
