The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1938, and after almost two decades, in the year 1957, Gokhale College got affiliation of Calcutta University for taking up courses that lead to the Graduation degree. Mathematics being the backbone of many subjects, especially Science, the institution decided to introduce the Mathematics Honours course in the year 1986, with the idea of promoting the study of the subject among the girl students.


 

Vision & Mission

  • Giving academic & personal counselling to the students is a regular feature of the department.
  • A Departmental/Seminar Library is run by the department for the students' benefit.
  • A Computer Lab. for the Department for Practical classes.
  • Departmental staff meetings are held from time to time.
  • Students' seminar is a regular feature of the department.
  • Illustrious speakers are invited by the department for delivering Special Lectures based on the UG syllabus of Calcutta University and their valuable Lectures are preserved by the department & distributed among the students.
  • The department organizes UGC - SPONSORED National & State Level Seminars from time to time.
  • Guardian meetings are held in the Department at regular intervals.
  • Students participate in different intra and inter-college competitions (Quiz, Poster, Elocution, Painting, etc.) and Science Exhibitions.
  • Students of the department take part in various extra-curricular activities (sports, music, dance, drama, etc.) and social activities (blood donation, cancer awareness programs etc.).
  • The department has introduced an award namely, "Mukul Mohan Ganguly Memorial Award" to the highest scorer in the B.Sc. Part-III Mathematics Honours Examination.

Prospects

Mathematics is the core subject for all Science and Technology combinations. So, an Honours Degree in Mathematics is not only a prerequisite for studying Post Graduate Courses in Mathematics in various Universities, it is also a prerequisite for pursuing further studies in the areas of Computer Applications, Engineering and Technology, Business and Administration, etc.

  • The students after completion of this course can opt for the following higher studies:
    Engineering Sciences Study - B.Tech.& M. Tech.
    Postgraduate Study - M.Sc.
    Postgraduate Study - Ph.D. & Research Scientist
    Other Post Graduation Courses- M.Phil., M.C.A, M.B.A
  • Specifically, the students of B.Sc. Mathematics Honours Course in CBCS System develops the ability to pursue more advanced studies related to Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics and Computer Applications, offered by the University of Calcutta as well as other Indian and International Universities. The following institutes offers higher learning in research areas for Mathematics in India:

  • There are many Career Opportunities for the students of both Honours and General courses of Mathematics after completion of this programme. The possible career choices are: Accountancy & Professional Services, Banking, Computing& IT Industry.
